Disaster Relief

A story at bedtime, a change of clean underwear, a new toothbrush. These seem so basic until you don't have them. First Book Canada works to help restore a sense of normalcy for kids; helping them begin to rebuild their lives.

From Hurricane Katrina to Hurricane Sandy to last year’s floods in Louisiana, First Book has distributed over 5 million books to families affected by disasters. We are also presently raising funds to support those affected by Hurricane Irma. We know how to work with first responders — and later schools and libraries as they re-open their doors — to get the right resources in the right hands at the right time. First Book is included in Charity Navigator’s approved list of highly-rated organizations responding in the aftermath of the storm.

Houston Book Distribution
First Book was on the ground in Houston, delivering books in the wake of hurricane Harvey

We were humbled to distribute brand-new books and basic needs items to Houston communities devastated by Hurricane Harvey in September 2017. Along with the AFT – American Federation of Teachers and Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation, we will continue to provide critical support for schools and programs affected by storms, and helping to replace lost books and supplies.

Know a Teacher Affected By a Natural Disaster?

Educators with students from low-income families, or those affected by disasters, can access the fund through the First Book Marketplace website and select books, notebooks, hygiene kits, clothing, school supplies and other items that schools aren’t providing or parents can’t afford, and to help restock schools and libraries. To become eligible for funds, educators must complete the free First Book registration.
